A BROKEN LAND, A UNITED SPIRIT
"If only there is the slightest hope, we will spare no effort; if only there is one survivor in the debris, we will never give up."
Monday, May 12, 2008, 2:28pm. The worst earthquake to hit China in over 50 years.
Death count: 20,000 and rising. Injured count: over 100,000.
Roads so devastated that rescuers and soldiers enter by parachute and foot.
Rescue and PLA forces begin to dig with their hands wherever cries for help are heard. Their hands bleeding, they pull children from under debris and bodies.
A school crumbles behind a distraught father who cries "There are no more! My child was not found!"
A toddler cries, "Save mama, save papa!" as she is carried from the ruins. Her parents are dead.
Soon, the news of the disaster spreads. People all over the world unite to donate money, blankets, food, and blood.
Beijing's blood bank is filled, and donors are told they will be contacted when there is more space.

INSIDE THE MIND OF THE DRAGON
As the long-procrastinated on CASA website nears its completion, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss why it is the way it is, and the concept I had in mind for this site.
I myself am deeply interested in the ancient, past, present, and future of Chinese culture. As such, I am not afraid to express my love of my people. Yes I realize that my Chinese is nowhere near fluent, and that the few eras of Chinese history I understand are miniscule compared to the millenia of history that is the Chinese nation.
But isn't that why we're here? Isn't that the exact reason why we work so hard to maintain the CASA community?
I'll tell you why I'm here. I'm here because I am in limbo. I was born an American, but my skin, my eyes, my hunger for everything Chinese all show that I am not. And while they scream that I am Chinese, my speech, my habits, my knowledge show that I am not. I am a Chinese-American, never quite fitting into the world I was born into, and always trying to enter a world I was not.
But there is a place for me. In a world hungry for cross-cultural exchanges and international relationships, we thrive. We don't regret that we are neither American nor Chinese, but rather rejoice that we few can choose to be both. Remember why we are a part of this organization. Remember why we are a part of this community. Remember the places we can go as a group that we could never go alone. And while the Americans will always look upon us as "FOBs", and the Chinese will always laugh "ABCs", we will proudly call ourselves the Chinese Americans.
